Utah has launched the Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) at the Department of Commerce, aiming to shape AI policy in the state. The OAIP will explore effective methods of AI regulation and guide the development of responsible policies. The office will include a Learning Lab to facilitate collaboration between industry experts, academics, and regulators to implement best practices in AI regulation. The lab's first focus will be on the use of AI in healthcare, with a specific focus on mental health. Utah is accepting feedback on future topics for the OAIP to focus on and the specific impacts AI has had on individuals and organizations. The new office is also authorized to offer regulatory mitigation agreements to lab participants. This comes after the passage of state Senate Bill 149, which formally established the OAIP. Governor Spencer Cox stated that the office is working to create an environment to ensure AI growth and success while taking data privacy and security threats seriously.
