The U.S. International Trade Commission has voted to initiate anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations into certain solar imports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This decision could lead to the imposition of new tariffs on these imports. The vote was in response to a trade petition brought by a group of seven U.S. solar manufacturers, including First Solar and QCells, alleging that the imports are being sold at prices below the cost of production and unfairly benefit from subsidies, including from Chinese government entities. As a result of the vote, solar stocks fell sharply in Friday's trading, and the U.S. Commerce Department will continue its probe into whether the foreign producers are dumping their solar equipment and receiving illegal government support, with the possible collection of preliminary duties as soon as July.
