'Surprising' amount of new capacity going to fast-growing Latin America trades - The Loadstar
While Asia-Europe trades gave taken up most new capacity delivered this year, shipping capacity on Latin America trades has also surged

MSC has achieved a record 20% share of the global container shipping market, thanks to a significant increase in capacity serving Latin America. Despite the large amounts of container shipping capacity being tied up in the Asia-Europe trades, other trades have seen substantial capacity injections over the past year. For example, capacity serving Latin America has increased by more than the global growth, with 2.85m teu of new capacity delivered to the global shipping fleet from June 2023 to June 2024. This has led to a 10.6% year-on-year increase in capacity. The Asia-Europe trades have seen a 23.8% increase in capacity, but this has not been reflected in increased volumes. On the other hand, capacity serving Latin America has jumped by 17.4% and now totals 4.1m teu across all trades. The lion’s share of the capacity now deployed to Latin America is ex-Asia, with some 1.53m teu deployed on Asia-South America west coast services and 860,000 teu on Asia-South America east coast services. This increase in capacity is expected to have a significant impact on the shipping industry.
