Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a two-day trip to France, where he was welcomed by President Emmanuel Macron. Despite Macron's efforts to press Xi on trade and foreign policy, the Chinese President offered no major concessions. Macron and Xi enjoyed lunch in the mountains and exchanged gifts. The two leaders discussed trade frictions and concluded some agreements, but no tangible concessions were made. China will allow imports of pig origin protein feed and pork offal from France, but hopes of an Airbus plane order were dashed. The visit was seen as an attempt to create policy space in case of a change in U.S. leadership. Macron's approach to Xi was criticized as "narcissistic diplomacy" by some. French cognac makers rallied as Xi presented an "open attitude" toward a trade dispute between the two countries. Xi later traveled to Serbia.
