MSC has reached a 20% global market share, making it the first liner to do so since Maersk briefly achieved this in early 2018. The company is also close to becoming the first carrier to operate a fleet of over 6 million teu. Meanwhile, Maersk has partnered with Hapag-Lloyd to form the Gemini Cooperation, which will launch in February 2025. Analysts predict that MSC's market share will equal that of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd combined. By 2026, MSC is projected to have a fleet with over 7 million slots. This raises questions about the dominance of European carriers in the global liner trade, especially in comparison to Chinese manufacturing dominance. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the ability of US infrastructure to handle such high volumes of traffic in the future.
