Illinois has been found to have the worst economic health of any state in the US, according to a new report by WalletHub. The report compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions: Economic Activity, Economic Health, and Innovation Potential. Illinois ranked 39th overall, with a score of 38.50. The state ranked worst in economic health and below average in the other two categories. Metrics that weighed the heaviest on the ranking scale included change in GDP from 2022 to 2023 and the number of firms in the Deloitte Fast 500 List. On the other hand, the top 10 best state economies were Washington, Utah, Massachusetts, Texas, California, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, the District of Columbia, and Arizona. The top 5 worst state economies were Louisiana, Arkansas, West Virginia, Hawaii, and Mississippi. The report also took into account factors such as the unemployment rate, poverty rate, and median annual household income. This news was reported by Claire Grant for The State Journal-Register.
