MoneyGram General Counsel Leaves to Join Coinme as Chief Legal and Compliance Officer

MoneyGram International, a Dallas-based peer-to-peer money-transfer company, has seen a shift in its partnership with Coinme, a leading licensed cryptocurrency cash exchange and mobile app. Coinme recently announced that Robert Villasenor, the general counsel for MoneyGram, will be leaving to join Coinme as the company’s chief legal and compliance officer. This move comes as Coinme continues to navigate the legal and regulatory framework of the crypto industry during its rapid growth.

Coinme, which provides a platform for buying, selling, storing, and managing cryptocurrencies, has experienced significant growth, surpassing $1 billion in retail sales and growing annually by 164% on average since its founding in 2014. With the addition of Villasenor, Coinme aims to strengthen its compliance efforts and expand its network of physical locations for buying and selling crypto.

Villasenor brings over 25 years of legal expertise to his new role, having previously served as general counsel, corporate secretary, and chief administrative officer at MoneyGram. He was also appointed to the Texas Work Group on Blockchain Matters in 2021, demonstrating his deep understanding of the legal nuances of crypto, money transmission, state and federal regulation, and consumer protection.

Coinme's recent funding of $35 million and its partnership with MoneyGram highlight the company's position as a key player in the crypto industry. With Villasenor on board, Coinme aims to continue its success and leadership in the market while prioritizing compliance and strategic growth.
