The U.S. solar manufacturing industry is facing a threat from China, according to members of Congress and companies like First Solar. They claim that China is illegally avoiding tariffs by importing solar products to the U.S. through other Southeast Asian countries, and dumping solar products into the U.S. below cost to squeeze American companies out of the market. The Solar Energy Industries Association expects the number of solar installations in the U.S. to double by 2030 and triple by 2034, and U.S. manufacturers are pushing for a level playing field to meet that rising demand instead of China. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown are leading a group of lawmakers in pushing for thorough investigations into Chinese companies to protect and spur innovation at home.
