The Biden-Harris Administration has announced new actions and resources to address chronic absenteeism in schools as part of the White House Every Day Counts Summit. The Administration is calling on states, cities, and schools to cultivate a "culture of attendance" and is sharing tools for effective communication with parents about attendance. The strategy also includes increasing effective communication with families, visiting families at home, making school more relevant for students, and meeting the basic needs of students and families. The Department of Education is releasing new resources and tools to support schools in addressing chronic absenteeism, and several new commitments to tackling absenteeism will be announced at the Summit. The Administration's Fiscal Year 2025 Budget proposal includes $8 billion in mandatory funding to help close opportunity and achievement gaps, including supporting evidence-based strategies to increase student attendance and engagement. The Administration has also provided resources and opportunities to support states, districts, and schools, including guidance on using American Rescue Plan Homeless Children and Youth funds for transportation and funding through the STOP School Violence Program.
