University at Buffalo Dentists Use AI to Plan Dental Surgeries

Doctors at the University at Buffalo are incorporating artificial intelligence into their dental care practices. While there's no need to fear a robot taking over your next dental procedure, the technology is being used to prepare for periodontics work such as implants and gum surgeries. According to UB professor Dr. Nathalia Andrade, AI allows dentists to gather and analyze a wealth of information from mouth scans and X-rays, enabling them to plan the perfect position for an implant and even anticipate future crown placement. Andrade emphasizes that AI is not flawless, but it serves as a valuable tool in surgical planning and execution. The team is still refining how to use AI and teaching the tool new techniques.
