Comtech Launches Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Public Safety Solution

Comtech has introduced SmartAssist™, an artificial intelligence (AI)-backed solution aimed at handling low-priority non-emergency calls without the need for a telecommunicator. SmartAssist utilizes AI chatbots to answer and triage non-emergency calls, helping Emergency Communications Centers and Public Safety Answering Points manage call and Internet of Things device volumes.

Jeff Robertson, President of Comtech’s Terrestrial & Wireless Networks Segment, stated that SmartAssist addresses staffing shortages and call volume challenges by streamlining 9-1-1 workflows with new AI-backed capabilities. The solution provides AI-backed voice and chatbot capabilities to handle a broad spectrum of low-priority non-emergency caller inquiries.

Comtech is currently partnering with multiple agencies and Next Generation 911 customers in the United States to integrate and deploy SmartAssist in PSAPs connected to the Company’s NG911 networks. This aims to enhance non-emergency 9-1-1 response rates, prioritize mission-critical calls, improve situational awareness, and reduce staffing shortages.

SmartAssist is the first solution within Comtech’s SmartNG portfolio of services, which will enable the convergence of Next Generation 911 and AI solutions to enhance and optimize ECC/PSAP workflows. The solution integrates with existing administrative phone lines without requiring changes to the Call Handling Equipment, and Comtech is continuing to build out its SmartNG portfolio with other interoperable AI-backed capabilities.
