A new white paper on artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in New Zealand has been released by the Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association. Titled "Aotearoa New Zealand Artificial Intelligence: A strategic approach 2024", the paper emphasizes the need for professional education at the university level for those implementing AI at companies. The association, which has over 450 members from academia, industry, and research organizations, highlights the importance of investing in leveraging New Zealand's strong AI research base to increase competitiveness and productivity. The paper also proposes four major goals for New Zealand, including increasing the number of outstanding local AI researchers and skilled graduates, establishing interconnected nodes of scientific excellence, developing global thought leadership on AI advances, and supporting a national research community on AI. Furthermore, the paper identifies strategic areas requiring primary investment focus, such as sustainable AI, ethical and explainable AI, and increasing investment from government and industry. The paper envisions New Zealand as a global exemplar of excellence and trust in AI by 2030 and invites stakeholders from all sectors to engage with its findings and proposals.
