Semiconductors Drive Global Economy and India's Technological Ambitions

The global semiconductor industry is rapidly growing, with a market worth of approximately USD 3 trillion. The rise of GenAI could push this growth even further, potentially reaching the US$ 1 trillion milestone earlier than expected. Efforts are being made to democratize the semiconductor manufacturing value chain, with India playing a significant role in this endeavor.

India's semiconductor market size was US$ 26 billion in 2022, and it is expected to cross US$ 80 billion by 2030. The government has been making efforts to boost semiconductor manufacturing and design, with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) being launched with a budget of Rs 76,000 crores (USD 10 billion) to achieve self-reliance and technological advancement in the sector.

Recent developments in the semiconductor industry in India include the approval of several new facilities, such as the Micron Technology Plant in Gujarat and the Tata Electronics Fab in Dholera, Gujarat. Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir is encouraged to participate in semiconductor product designs and system-level product development, which could kick-start the transformation of the economy in the UT.

The semiconductor design and IP development in J&K will not only have the participation of UT in this strategically important sector at the country level, but also kick-start transformation of the economy in the UT by creating hi-tech and new age employment opportunities, need for introduction of pertinent and industry relevant skilling and courses, and creation of technology pool, which is an essential asset of any economy nowadays.
