AI could prevent future power outages by automatically rerouting electricity in milliseconds, researchers report.

Table of Contents

Researchers have developed an artificial intelligence model to help electrical grids prevent power outages by automatically rerouting electricity in milliseconds. This "self-healing grid" technology uses AI to detect and repair problems autonomously, without human intervention. The system can identify alternative routes to transfer electricity to users before an outage occurs and can reroute electrical flow in microseconds. The team used algorithms that apply machine learning to graphs to map the complex relationships between entities in a power distribution network. The researchers now aim to develop similar technology to repair and restore the grid following a power disruption. The research appears in Nature Communications and was supported by the US Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation.
