The Department of Labor has released a set of principles for developers and employers to follow when using artificial intelligence in the workplace. These principles aim to protect workers from potential harm while also ensuring that they benefit from new opportunities created by AI. The guidelines include centering worker empowerment, ethically developing AI, establishing AI governance and human oversight, ensuring transparency in AI use, protecting labor and employment rights, using AI to enable workers, supporting workers impacted by AI, and ensuring responsible use of worker data. These principles are intended to provide a roadmap for developers and employers on how to harness AI technologies for their businesses while ensuring workers are protected. The Department of Labor developed these principles with input from workers, unions, researchers, academics, employers, and developers, and through public listening sessions.
