Armenian Opposition Politician Criticizes Government's Foreign Policy

Eduard Sharmazanov, a member of the former ruling Republican Party, has criticized the current Armenian leadership for its lack of a foreign policy agenda. Sharmazanov stated that the government's actions are leading to the "Azerbaijanization" of the Armenian state, with no calculated steps or strategies serving the interests of Armenia. He pointed to the recent sending of an Armenian delegation to Ukraine as evidence of this lack of strategy. Sharmazanov also expressed support for Armenian-Russian allied relations and criticized Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for legitimizing Azerbaijan's actions against Armenia. Pashinyan had recently stated that Azerbaijan's threats against Armenia were a major challenge that needed to be overcome. Sharmazanov accused Pashinyan of effectively performing the functions of Azerbaijan's defense and foreign ministers. These comments come amid ongoing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.
