AIDS Healthcare Foundation Applauds FTC Action Against Big Pharma's Abuse of Patent System
AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has voiced its support for the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in challenging major pharmaceutical companies, including GSK, for their anticompetitive use of "junk patents" that keep drug prices artificially high. AHF President Michael Weinstein criticized big pharma for abusing the patent system and applauded the FTC and the Biden administration for scrutinizing these practices. GSK has also prevented several middle-income countries from accessing generic versions of the HIV drug dolutegravir, but Colombia recently issued a compulsory license on the drug, allowing it to treat more people at a lower cost. AHF, the largest global AIDS organization, provides medical care and services to over 1.9 million clients in 47 countries worldwide.
