Marine biologist Diego Cardeñosa has dedicated his life to protecting sharks, which are facing a conservation crisis with 35% of all shark species threatened with extinction. Overfishing, particularly for shark meat and fins, is the primary reason for their decline. Cardeñosa has developed a portable DNA kit to combat the illegal trade of endangered sharks, which has been successful in identifying illegal shipments and has led to increased seizures of shark fins in Hong Kong. His research has also helped expand the number of shark species regulated by CITES, and he is working with local fishermen in South America to fish sustainably and protect endangered shark populations. Cardeñosa encourages people to consume seafood from sustainable sources and to donate to his research through the FIU Foundation.
